Pharmacy Jobs

Pharmacists are medication experts. Their job is to thoroughly understand how medications are formulated, how they work therapeutically, what their side effects are, and any drug interactions that could occur in combination with other medications. Pharmacists’ job duties can occur in one of several areas of the industry, including:

Regulatory

Regulatory pharmacists work for the government. They help protect the public’s health by working for organisations such as the MHRA. Pharmacy job duties involve ensuring that the medicines offered by drug companies are safe. After approval, the drugs can be manufactured and then distributed to the public.

Academic

Academic pharmacists spent about 60% of their time working in other areas of pharmacy, such as community, hospital or industrial, and then spend 40% of their time working in pharmacy education as teachers or lecturers.

Community

The community pharmacist works in various community pharmacy settings such as high street and supermarket pharmacies, and those in rural areas. Community pharmacy jobs are to make sure that medicines are safely supplied, and are used correctly by patients, whether bought over the counter or prescribed. They work closely with patients, so interpersonal skills are particularly important with this particular specialty. This type of pharmacist is also responsible for the financial management of the pharmacy, including inventory. The community pharmacist also supervises staff, and is responsible for the maintenance of the pharmacy building or location.

Hospital pharmacy

The hospital pharmacist’s job is to manufacture, purchase, do quality testing, and dispense all medicines used in a particular hospital. In addition to these duties, they also educate nurses, doctors, and other medical staff on the proper selection and dosing of medications for patients. They also work individually with patients to help them understand how to use the medications they have been prescribed, including any side effects they may encounter. When healthcare professionals offer new courses of treatment to patients, the pharmacist makes sure that that new courses of treatment are compatible with any current medications a particular patient may be taking.

Industrial

Industrial pharmacists work with scientists in the pharmaceutical industry, discovering new ways to combat disease and improving the production and manufacture of medications.

Primary care

Pharmacy jobs in primary care work with medical organisations. The pharmacists’ responsibility is to manage resources most effectively. They manage the resources that have been allocated to organisations like hospitals, clinics, and general practices, and they analyse medicines to make sure that they’re effective and safe.
